May 2025 – Important Notice
Members of the public are advised that as part of the process of seeking regulatory approval for extended rail operations to Berriedale, the Tasmanian Transport Museum Society has updated its Safety Management System. Key changes involve procedural amendments to crossings, work trains, the use of traffic protection officers as well as changes to its Railway Rules, its Special Operating Procedures and updated Risk Assessments.
If anyone has any questions or comments they wish to make, please email the Museum’s Rail Operations Manager via the contact form link above before 31 May 2025 or call 0428 386 843 for details.
Any updates to the changes will appear on this page prior to extended rail operations commencing later this year, currently subject to approval.

Progress Status – As of April 2025
The museum formally submitted the Variation of Accreditation to the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) to seek accreditation to operate trains to Berriedale Rd. The application will now go through a rigorous assessment by ONRSR and could take a number of months to assess the application. If approved, the museum will extend train operations from Grove Rd to Berriedale Rd.

Progress Status – As of July 2024

After completing track work on the Elwick Rd to Grove Rd section in May 2023, work then focused on the Grove Rd to Berriedale Rd section. As of July 2024, sleeper replacement has reached the Brooker Highway overpass and work on tamping sleepers in progressing.

Completion of the final section of track between Berriedale Rd and Mentmore St is dependent on level crossing infrastructure.  Extension of train rides to Berriedale is currently in the planning and assessment stage and final level crossing design.

Track work nears the Brooker Highway overpass.

May 18 2023
