See the trains, trams and buses that were once a common sight throughout Tasmania. On selected days, enjoy a short train ride and relive train travel from a bygone era.

A little bit about our beginnings

In 1960 four men from Hobart persuaded the Metropolitan Transport Trust (MTT) to donate a Hobart tram for preservation. From this small beginning, the Tasmanian Transport Museum Society was formally established in 1962. In 1965 the society purchased its first railway locomotive and on 3 December 1983, the museum site was officially opened to the public.

Over the years, development of the museum site has included the laying of rail tracks, building of a roundhouse and numerous sheds to house our carriages, buses, trams and steam technology exhibits.

The former New Town railway station, signal box from the Botanical Gardens and other historic items have been relocated to the museum over the years, providing an authentic setting for the display and operation of rail exhibits.

We are entirely run by volunteers and we are a registered charity with donations tax deductible.

The Tasmanian Transport Museum Society (TTMS) mission is to shine a light on the evolution of transport in Tasmania from the past right up to the present through the static display of transport themed exhibits and the on-going acquisition, preservation and operation of an active fleet of historic vehicles.
